FAB FOUR WIN ENGLAND CALL-UPS

Wednesday saw the final preparations for the British University Games at Loughborough University. The squad will travel to Scotland on Monday for four days and play Wales and Scotland in this years triangular tournament to see who will take this year’s British Crown.

Loughborough will be represented by four first team players; Liam Hopkins, Liam Green, Andy Brown and Bradley Pritchard. Liam Hopkins in action

Team Manager Steve Sharman said “The day has gone really well. The players who have been selected showed great application during the day that included fitness testing. Many of them had played or trained for their club the night before.” Sharman also suggested that the players will have to mentally strong whilst they are in Scotland because as with any tournament beating England is a huge victory. Dawn Scott, Exercise Scientist at the Football Association who will be a key member of staff in Scotland put the squad through the fitness test as she commented “The boys really applied themselves well and the levels of fitness are very good. This, and our preparation and recovery strategy will be crucial to allow the players to play at the optimum”

England captain Marc Richards of Gloucester City and UWE Hartpury said “This is a really important part of our season. It was great to win the tournament 3 years ago and we now have the chance to get to taste that again. With only two of the squad having played in the Games before it is a great opportunity for the new boys to make a real impact on tournament”

Also joining the players at Loughborough was Robbie Simpson who last year graduated from Loughborough University, played in the England Universities programme and now is a full time professional at Coventry City in the Championship. Robbie said “I really think my experience at Loughborough has helped me a lot for the situation I’m in now as a full time footballer. It was brilliant to work experience for me and meant that when I went to Coventry I had no inhibitions about training full time. The standard of University football is always improving. The players on this programme are playing the standard I was two years ago and look at me now. Loughborough’s Andy Brown is the top goal scorer in the Conference North, which shows the level of talent. If the players really want it and keep going they will be able to play professional too”

England Vice Captain Roy Sandeman who is at Leeds University “I cannot wait to get to Scotland to play. We have prepared really well and are all looking forward to delivering the goods.”
