ROB SMITH REVEALED
Behind Closed Doors caught
up with midfielder Rob Smith. Pubby has been impressive this season and is
now one of the social secs so will be integral to the clubs success next
year. He reveals the highlights from his footballing career and his views on the
football world...
Can
you tell me about your time at Loughborough, highlights and lowlights...
Not a lot to tell really! I’m going into my third (though hopefully not
final) year, studying Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Every night
out with the footy lads is a massive highlight and I’m looking forward to
many crazy nights next year. Lowlights probably just not getting involved
with the football club enough in my first year!!
Can you shed
any light on your footy career outside of Loughborough?
Played for Beckenham town pretty much forever, had a mad final season
winning the London cup, Kent cup, and the league and league cup!
What is the highest achievement in your career so far?
Had brief spell with Wimbledon as a
youngster, most proud moment was probably winning managers player in my
final season at Beckenham Town.
And which is your most memorable game for Loughborough?
Has to be the semi against MMU last
year, we knew we didn't deserve to be there but at the same time we knew
we had every chance of winning it. Shame Collett decided to attack their
centre forward and give away that penalty : (
Who is your best friend in LSAFC (not including Nick Drew)?
I wouldn’t like to name any names but I’ve had an awesome year with all
the boys in the freshers firsts. I Suppose I should give a little shout
out to my future housemates Drew, Scotty and Sean!

Have you any funny tales that you can tell us?
Too many! You have to bare in mind that I spent a lot of the year messing
about with drew and Charlie! One night we were coming home from Echos and
someone (naming no names) stole a load of hangers from the cloakroom on
the way out. When we got back to campus the stage from Freefest was still
up so we decided to jump up and pull a few moves for the imaginary crowd.
Within about 30 seconds security was on the scene and they nearly ran me
over as I tried (prison break style) to escape. Turns out someone had
reported seeing youths with an “unidentified object”, the coat hangers,
dancing on the stage!
Which team do you support?
I support two, England and LSAFC, with regards to the premier league I’d
have to say my allegiances lie with Arsenal
Who is your childhood
hero and why?
Gazza, an awesome player with banter to match. Also I love to see a
skilful player in an England shirt.
What three
items would you take to a desert island and why?
Two cold pints of fosters and a football. I’d sit and drink the pints
while I came to terms with the fact that I’d be spending the rest of my
life on a desert island, then I'd use the glasses as cones and play
football to keep myself happy and healthy.
Are there any youngsters we should look out for coming through the ranks?
Is this
where you sign up for the Scotty bandwagon? There’s defo a few players in
the fives and sixes who will impress in preseason and I’ve little doubt
that a few of them will taste the dizzy heights of the first team.
Who has the
most bant in the whole club?
Technically
at the time of going to press Barks, Smiffy etc have left so I’m gonna go
for it and say that me and Drew have got the best bant, come to the
socials next season for a free demonstration.
When people
say in football ‘play in the hole’, can you tell me where that is?
I can’t be entirely sure, not really my thing, I’d have to talk to Scouse
about it.
What’s your preference between these street cred benchmarks:
Lost or
Prison Break?
Prison break
Pat
Butcher or Pauline Fowler?
Hmm… topical, Pat
butcher used to be a prostitute which is never good, but I think id rather
live with her than Pauline, she’s just plain annoying.
Prada shoes
or my granddad sandles?
Granddad sandals.
Peter Crouch or Michael Owen? Depends if you mean for more than one
minute because that’s about as long as Michael Owen can go without getting
injured.
Russ Noble
or Andy Noble?
I’ll be honest I don’t
really know then so I’m gonna guess, Russ.
Pint or
girlie bottle?
Pint please.
Eddie Izzard
or Jimmy Carr?
Jimmy Carr
Lastly, what does the
future hold for your football career? Do you have a message for the lads
at LSAFC?
I’ve no
idea what the future holds for me, I’d love to win something in a
Loughborough shirt playing alongside my mates, so that’s my goal at the
moment!
In terms of a message for the lads; Get ready for some awesome banter this
season! Anyone that’s got decent ideas for socials send them to me or Drew
and we’ll make it happen!
A huge thanks to Rob for this article and
for all the help this season fella.
