LEON McSWEENEY REVEALED
Behind Closed Doors caught
up with first team midfield ace Leon McSweeney for an insight into the life
of the tough-tackling Irishman. He reveals the highlights from his footballing career and his views on the
football world...
Can
you tell me about your time at Loughborough, highlights and lowlights?
Highlights have to be winning the BUSA championship two years in a row,
winning MoM in the final the first time round (Sorry Franny, but when you
take forty shots in one game and only hit the target in the penalty shoot
out, it makes sense !!)
Lowlights have to be not moving into halls, but I reckon if that happened
I wouldn't be here today!!
Can
you shed any light on your footy career outside of Loughborough?
Played back home in Ireland for Cork City before signing a 3 year
professional contract with Leicester City in 2001 when I was 18. Won the
Unibond premier league with Hucknall Town FC in 2004 , and got promoted
with Hednesford Town in 2005. Currently a free agent looking for a wedge!!
What is the highest achievement in your career so far?
Signing for Leicester City at Filbert Street before the premiership match
with Tottenham.......simply unbelievable.
And which is your most memorable game for Loughborough?
Lincoln away always provides fond memories, but it must be the two BUSA
finals.....unforgettable, two great teams with a phenomenal bunch of
lads......words can't describe how much I love 'em.
Who was your best friend in LSAFC (Not including Nick Drew)?
I'm still here and my door is open to all... but my best friend has to be
Bobby Fisher, he is pure jokes when you can find him!!
Have you any funny tales that you can tell us?
I have a whole lot, most of which have happened in the last
week..............although Phil Miller buying a crate of non alcoholic
beer for the coach home after the BUSA final is still high on the thick
list................then we have the sheesha and magners stories which we
won't go into!!
Which team do you support?
The Celts........Glasgow Celtic FC
Who is your childhood hero and why?
I loved watching Bryan Robson and Paul McGrath but Roy Keane is my
idol.......an absolute living legend like Windy and Barks.
How do you think England will fair in the world cup this summer? Who is
your tip to win it?
Bothered, they'll just bottle it like Bath!!! My tip is Ireland, oh
shiiiiiiii, probably Trinidad although I fancy Sweden
too..........seriously though it's Brazil.
Can you tell me something unusual about your past?
Nothing to tell really, although I never drank till I came to
Loughborough.
Who has the best and worst hair cuts at the club?
Best hair cut has to be Windy, so much time and effort....the man never
looks bad. The worst has to be Simmo's no nonsense cut, my shocker although when
it's styled it rocks, and Liam is ginger so any haircut will look
bad......best dancer at uni though!!!
What is currently playing on your CD player?
Black eyed peas greatest hits, a bit of B*witched and I love a Westlife
album!!
Which three players have the most ‘chav’ status?
All I'm saying is AIR FORCE BARKS MALLY ONES......he's not chav but they
were absolute rascals!!
Lastly, what does the future hold for your football career? Do you have a
message for the lads at LSAFC?
I'm confident my future is football so hopefully I can stay fit and see
what happens. All I wanna say to the lads is that it's been an absolute
pleasure being part of the squad, and to play not only with a quality set
of players but a quality set of lads which I think is more important.
Ye're in my hearts and always in my phonebook, thanks for the memories.
Love ye x x
A huge thanks to Leon for this article.
