DATE: June 2008    VENUE: Loughborough University

When the LSAFC Alumni started in 2000 it was agreed that having established a network of former associates, we needed to get theme together as many had not met together collectively since graduation. A 5-a-side tournament was trialled and has subsequently grown to be an annual tournament and get-together for the Alumni and is still going strong in its 6th year!

At the time of setting up the tournament, news filtered through to the Committee that one of its former members and player, Eddie Gregg, had tragically passed away from Leukaemia at the tender age of only 24.  Eddie was a former first team player during the 90’s, but moreover was a top lad who was liked fondly by everyone he came into contact with. He spent four excellent years at the University and via testimonials from his close friends, former team mates and his family it is clearly felt that he had some of the most enjoyable years of his life at the University, particularly whilst in and around the football club.

With this in mind it felt fitting that the tournament should be held, not only as a get together for the Alumni members, but in memory of Eddie; the two seem to go hand-in-hand as Ed would have loved to have been part of this amongst his mates, playing football and having a beer.

Each year the tournament helps to raise money for two charities, one of which is the Willow Foundation which is closely linked to the Alumni via the Charity's founder Bob Wilson (ex Arsenal GK), who was a former student at Loughborough back in the 60's. For more details of the excellent work that the Willow Foundation does please click on the link: http://willowfoundation.org.uk

The tournament involves current students, recent graduates and graduates from as far back as the 1980’s creating teams and battling out for the coveted title presented by Eddie’s father, Alan.  It has grown year-on-year to over 20 teams with some great (and terrible!) football being played – the common theme being that when you come along once, you come back every year as it is such a good laugh especially in the bars afterwards!
